Hi,
I'm not a web designer, but I am a techie, so I can point you in the right general direction with setting up a website.
1. You need to decide on the name of your website as the first step - this is also called a domain name.
2. Once you have chosen the name, you need to check that it isn't already taken by some-one else and register it - an Internet Service Provider (ISP) or Hosting Company can do this for you.
I would recommend 1and1.co.uk - they seem to be very efficient and cheap (from personal experience only - no affiliation).
3. Once the registration has taken place and you have the name registered to you, the Internet Service Provider (ISP) will give you the details to access this usually through something called FTP, which is used to transfer images and files to the webserver.
Most ISP's now provide a SiteBuilder Tool which allows you to build your own website using a professionally designed template, which usually includes colour schemes, suggested fonts etc and is a good starting place for someone who wants to setup a website but isn't interested in the "nuts and bolts" of getting this to work.
Most ISP's also offer some sort of e-commerce or payment facilities that you can add onto your website. You can also use PayPal for free with their usual transaction charges - message me or post up on here if you need help to do this.
Hope this helps.

I'm going to suggest something that sounds very complicated but it's really worth it -
I've been using xampp for a while now and found it incredibly useful. Whatever way you decide to make websites, it's well worth taking the time to learn.
It's basically a server that's designed so you can experiment with websites on your own computer (I believe you could actually use it to serve pages but it's not recommended because it's configured for ease of use rather than security).
After you've installed it, anything you put in its htdocs folder works from localhost - what that means is that if I put a page called hello.html in htdocs, going to http://localhost/hello.html would show me that page just as if it were online.
That might all sound a bit complicated, but if you read through the docs and figure it out, you can then try things like Wordpress (which is often used for websites, not just blogs).
You'd just put the 'wordpress' folder in htdocs and (after a bit of configuration) have a fully functioning wordpress site when you go to http://localhost/wordpress in your browser.
Then once your comfortable experimenting on your computer, you could use wordpress with a real webhost.
As I said, a lot of learning doing the above, but once you've got a website using software like Wordpress set up, updating and changing them is unbelievably easy. You can add new content just as easy as posting to this thread.0 -

tazzababe, do you know what kind of website you want to run?
Do you have a business idea in mind or are you not certain yet?0 -
Hi
When selecting a host look for those that run a cPanel aswell as FTP. FTP is good for file transfer, but, the cPanel (which is also another way of file transfer) contains tools for working with databases, adding email accounts, setting your error pages, and may also include fantastico, this is a series of scripts that self install from the cPanel. This includes ecommerce solutions, forums, blogs, calendars, directory scripts, wiki scripts etc etc etc. Far easier than manually loading the scripts and setting up databases. I use https://www.fuzioned.co.uk for my hosting... a small company with really good customer service.0 -

I design websites for friends to help there businesses.
The company I recommend for purchasing a domain name and hosting is a company called www.compila.co.uk
I have been using them for years, they are very good and offer good support.
Remember the 2 main things you need is a domain name and hosting.
Compila seem to be really cheap compared to other companies like 1and1, take a look here:
http://www.compila.com/pages/hosting/linuxindex.html
The cheapest package is £12 pa ex VAT but you have to buy 2 years. That includes a .co.uk domain name.
They also give you a cpanel which makes life easy when it comes to configuring the site.Be ALERT - The world needs more LERTS0
