Moving into new house

Hi,
Probably a stupid question...
Just bought my first house and the utilities are with SSE. I've had a look around and they're not the cheapest. Before I can switch do I need to contact them with readings and sign up for some kind of tariff or can my new supplier (whoever they are) do it all for me?
All opinions are my own and in no way contain official advice or guidelines.

You are already under contract with the supplier to the property under Deemed Contract terms at the supplier’s most expensive standard variable rate. Call them with meter readings and your details and then you are free to initiate a switch. The actual transfer of supply can take up to 5 weeks (often less). The Deemed Supplier will bill you for all energy used until the transfer/s go through.
