Tax Refund when off sick

Hi Everyone,

Just looking for a bit of advice. I have been off sick in this current tax year from August to the 7th Jan. During this period I just received SSP.

My annual income is £18,000 so by the end of the year I estimate I will earn less then £11,500, as I have had a little bit of other time off. Does this mean I will be due a refund for the tax I've already paid and if so how and when will I get it?

Also will my employer still tax me for the rest of the tax year even though I'll be under the threshold. I would ask them but it's a very small company and I probably won't get a straightforward answer.

Thanks.

If your employer has been paying your SSP then you should already have had your tax refund, some in each month's pay. You should check your payslips as they should show a tax refund monthly & by now it should all have been refunded. Unless of course your tax code is non-cumulative (ends in X or something similar). If your tax code is non-cumulative then get onto HMRC asap & ask them to update it correctly or try your personal tax account.

Thanks, although I still don't have my payslips I can tell from the amount I haven't had the tax back. So I will check this with them thanks.

Unfortunately they're a bit of an unprofessional company.

SSP is considered "normal pay" for PAYE purposes. PAYE calculates the tax due on what you have earned year to date on each pay packet and deducts or refunds automatically. If you have not been refunded you are either on an M1 tax code or they are not running payroll correctly.

Another question on this, sorry if it's the wrong place.

I get 20 days holiday plus bank holidays. During my sickness there have been 4 bank holidays, what should happen with these as I was receiving SSP.

    Thanks.
