Can’t find credit file

Myself and hubby are trying to check our credit scores. Have tried agencies online. However, our postcode is not registered and credit agencies can’t find us. Also, therefore we are not on the electoral register. We are both in our late 50’s so there is plenty of history to be looked at!
We have tried to open bank accounts and tried to buy a sofa on credit but been refused when banks/stores check our credit history ..... how can they check if we can’t?

Maybe they can't and that's why you get refused?

Its your history you want to check not the score.

Why are you not in the electoral register ?
  • Hubby has always refused to be on the electoral role out of choice .... feels it is too much “big brother is watching you” !!. We have all previous addresses registered but current address is “unknown” within the post office.... ie when you put in our post code it never comes up in the drop down selection despite the building being there for over 100 years. We always have to enter it manually but you don’t have the option to do that on credit reference web sites!

You will have to get the postcode resolved at the very least, the starting point will be to ring your council about that and take it from there. Though not being on the electoral roll is always going to be a massive risk for any potential lender, big enough to warrant automatic refusal, and that will only get worse every year as this process has less and fewer humans involved.
  • Also there won't be plenty of history to look at.

Just the last 6 years worth
  • We can’t do anything about the postcode as it’s not our property, it comes with the job and the owner doesn’t want to change things as it doesn’t matter to him !
  • We have only lived here 2 years and bought some debts with us, some of which we have now cleared but can’t check wether they have been taken off as cannot view the credit file.

It doesn't matter about the owner. You need to find out the correct postcode for your property. It must have one.

    Do you pay council tax?
  • The property does not have a postcode, we have checked with the post office and it is not registered, we do not pay council tax at this property.
