Thanks everyone for your ideas.
It looks like it is between Laser Quest and Alien Wall, both in Edinburgh. We have spoken to both sites and they can both accommodate us so it looks like it's all up to the boy himself.
If anyone is interested I will let you know how we get on.

I took my 10 year old and 3 friends to alien Rock 2 for Bouldering last year , they all loved it. I think it was about £5.00 each , and then we went to McD s for something to eat. He was well chuffed as all his friends voted it the coolest party, its a little scary as they climb up the walls without ropes, and then jump off onto thick matting, but once they got the hang of it, they had a ball.

totally off topic but is it the owner of alien rock who was rebuilding the house in Grand Designs that was revisted last week?
fabulous house and a real labour of love
(shame about the quad biking and I'll pass on alien rock!)0 -
Yes I think it was him on the Grand Designs. What a fantastic programme, I'm always a little sad when the series finishes. (I think I need to get a life or am I just getting old).
It's on tonight so I will have to set the recorder.0 -
Hi, last year we took our son Go Karting. Check the yellow pages for an indoor karting centre, they sometimes do a party package and the kids love it !!! You'll spend the whole time with your hands covering your eyes though !!!!0

We have moved back from abroad about 6 months ago and I am a bit in shock as to what people do around here (guess it's quite wealthy) for their kids birthdays...
My birthday rounds are coming in a little while but I'd like to be prepared.
I love my 3 littles darlings dearly but I am not ready to spend £12.5 a head (and invite 12) at a local pottery cafe + food +party bags (for a 7 years old) or have a disco party for my 5 years old...
I do however want them to have a fun party that they will remember for a long time.
Ideas on games/themes that really work but don't cost a bomb?I lost my job as a cricket commentator for saying “I don’t want to bore you with the details”.Milton Jones0 -
One of the most succesful parties I did for my son was a pirate party. Made a skull and X bones cake, did pass the parcel with an eye patch in every layer so they all got one , then they made hats out of black card and white paint and they all helped with painting a big treasure map and of an island with trees, chest, bones camps etc. and it was hunt the thimble but for gold chocolate coins. They all had a fab time (I think only about 8 of them)and it didn't cost a lot just needed planning.
Another idea that I always did, and the younger ones love it, is to have a small fairy cake for each child. Let them decorate it to their own taste and then give them all a candle so when the Happy Birthday is sung around the cake they all get to blow out a candle! Dont bow to pressure - I never did party bags- but you can do a lucky dip so they all take something away be it a pencil or rubber.0 -
My daughter wasn't going to have a party this year, then one day she crumbled & said all she wanted was a small party & to play musical statues, bumps & pass the parcel, so thats what we did, I also looked online & found a game called icebergs, all you need are sheets of newspaper, one for each child, each time the music stops you move away one piece of paper, like musical chairs without chairs & a bit safer! I bought a bubble machine as well (£20 from Argos) which kept them amused for ages, hired a room locally for 2 hours cost £10 I bottled out of having it at home!

There always seems to be a thread on the subject I haven't seen ....
I'm fine with the food.. and DD has about 5 years worth of cakes chosen from a great book.
It's really great fun but no headache games I am after!
One year she had a fairy tale party ...but the "fairy tale hunt" did not work terribly well as they kind of all cheated. I had made our own bank notes (Kimbos for Kimberley....with her on one side and her brothers on the back) and they could spend it buying drinks and received thier change in chocolate money. The cake was a castle of course...I lost my job as a cricket commentator for saying “I don’t want to bore you with the details”.Milton Jones0
