Guarantee not upheld. can i fight it

Oct 2013 ...I buy a Kidde dual smoke and carbon monoxide detector from kirkby components via ebay with a 10 year guarantee.

Indeed Kidde themselves offer a 5 year guarantee on it.

when i got it , It was exactly the one i ordered in the picture on ebay. Lovely.... and its worked well for 4 years.
But sadly now kaput!

I phone kidde to try for a replacement under guarantee.
They tell me that the actual model number i received from kirkby is not the model number, that was written on kirkbys sales invoice to me.
So,they cant help.

I phone kirkby.
They say, Yes! looks like weve sent you out the right model,l but put the wrong part number on our invoice.

Apparantly they cant honour my guarantee as it was down to me to check that the correct model number was written on their invoice, even though , they got it wrong, when I received the unit 4 years ago.

My response was ...so If you thought you were buying a washing machine model number WABD14732/UK467 ( for example) and their invoice read WABD14782/UK467, would you really be expected to notice that it was not the same model number as was on the invoice, after delivery.

Are we now expected to meticulously inspect and cross check sales invoices to make sure they havnt messed up with the wrong part numbers?

Its only 15 quids worth, but ive got the bit between my teeth for this. I feel really unfairly treated.
Anyone got any ideas where I stand please?
cheers

Stand next to the bin, drop it in and buy a new one.

Preferably, a small electricals recycling bin.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

If the terms of their guarantee show you have to "meticulously inspect and cross check sales invoices to make sure they havnt [sic] messed up with the wrong part numbers" then that's what you have to do.

Unfortunately this seems to be a thing that happens more frequently now.
I understand exactly how you feel and depending on what who you speak to at the company you might get a sympathetic answer of not.

I'd personally go direct to Kidde customer service and maybe you'll get lucky.

    Good luck
