i really didn't know where to post this so sorry if it is in totally the wrong place.
has anyone got insurance cover for their glasses?
i bought a new pair from boots recently and they offered me insurance for £18 a year but i didn't want to take it without shopping around for other prices, but i have googled glasses insurance and drawn a blank! anyone know any cheap companies offering this?
i wouldn't bother but the glasses cost £260 and i am a bit clumsy and also have a destructive 2 year old! i could claim on my house insurance but there is a £100 excess and obviously would affect any no claims discount.
any help appreciated!
thanks

I have been a glasses wearer for almost 30 years. Started wearing from about the age of 8-9. In all these years I have has to replace my glasses as a result of breakages four times, twice due to school scuffles (a LONG time ago), once due to work mishap (work paid replacement costs) and once, within a week of buying new glasses and accidentally stepping on them.
I work in an environment where my glasses could be grabbed or knocked from my face every day and my last pair cost me a shocking £300.
I would be unlikely to take out extra insurance for them, but then I wear my glasses from the moment I wake to the moment I sleep. I know of someone who only wears hers if she really has to and vanity ALWAYS gets the better of her, resulting in many pairs she has broken or mis-shapen in which case she may need it.
really depends on what type of person you are.0 -
thanks for the reply, i wear mine morning till night too, i am blind as a bat without them. i think i might just buy one of those really cheap pairs from an online retailer for about 10 quid to have as my 'round the house' pair, then it doesn't matter too much if they get broken, and i can just save my new ones for going out and looking snazzy!!0

I recently got some new specs from Boots and took out the insurance. Whilst it won't pay out if the specs are lost/stolen, it will if your lenses are scratched. This is a problem I tend to have ... mainly caused by falling asleep wearing my glasses (another problem I tend to have LOL). So I figure that for £18 I can get nice new shiny lenses in my very expensive frames (which were actually a bargain) before my year of cover is out so extending the life of them. That's the theory anyway!0

Have you got all risks insurance? I had to claim for mine on this some years ago - OK, it includes an excess but if you've got it anyway you're covered for your expensive glasses. What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0

I claimed on my house insurance when I broke mine, dont ask what I was doing but it involved some roller blades :rotfl:0

I am similar to consumermonkey, have worn glasses for the last 45 years and am blind without them.
Have never had insurance for them but do keep a spare pair in the car. My biggest fear is to break them when away from home and being unable to get the car back.
I have had a few breakages as a kid but I think that if you rely totally on your glasses as I do then you tend to modify your behaviour/actions (probably unconciously) to minimise the risk of breakages. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. i have had two new pairs on my insurance in 12 months as my dog chewed them twice, 2nd time had different frame which were £10 dearer but did not have to pay that. bargain for £18 a year0

Your glasses are usually covered on your home contents insurance. If you've taken out accidental and cover away from home, you'll be covered for everything!! But you will have to pay the excess. Do you pay an excess with the glasses insurance?0

Hi Forum & Thread,
As a life-long glasses wearer I have in the last 3 years started to buy glasses insurance, simply because i have special lightweight plastic lenses that cost a fortue, near £300, frames only £100 approx.
I need these lenses to prevent that eye magnifying efefct that is so awful looking.
My houses insurance excess and NCD would be trashed if I diddn;t have specific cover for my glasses.

Hi guys,
There are plenty of online opticians around that sell exactly the same glasses that you have more than likely bought on the high street at a fraction of the cost. The £18 for insurance you've been mentioning is £6 more than what companies like www.speckyfoureyes.com charge for complete glasses!
They are definately something worth considering - even just for spare pairs.
I've bought several off them now and can't fault them.
