NHS PPC cards and ESA

Hi all again!
So, brief backstory- My partner currently pays £10.40 a month for an NHS PPC card as he has to pick up at least 2 prescriptions per week, when he left his job due to ill health he was put on CB ESA, long story short the decision from his interview was he was placed in the support group.
We claim ESA as a couple now as I was already on IB ESA before meeting him, now we live together he claims it for the both of us (£348.50 a fortnight) and my claim is open as a NI claim.
He’s still using his ppc card as you have to see the 12 months through of paying by DD it says on the website, the year is up in March but I was just wondering if he actually needs to renew this or is he entitled to free prescriptions anyway because of our ESA? The reason he started it in the first place was cos when he was with his wife she had a tax thing which meant he got them for free on that or something but when he left her she took him off it and being on CB ESA he wasn’t entitled to free prescriptions so we thought it best he got a ppc card.
Am I right in thinking this though or shall he keep the ppc card?
