Better to open window or leave closed for condensed windows to dry up?

After a bath, when I’ve had a window open and the relative humidity has come down to a “normal” value like say 50%, but there is still condensation on the window…

Am I better off leaving the window open, or closing it? My thinking is that the moisture on the window may evaporate quicker when it’s warmer.

It will clear quicker open but will chill the room. Wipe it with toilet paper? Squeegee? Put the fan on 5 mins before you shower and leave it on 20 mins after.

  • It doesn't need to be wide open, and you can leave blinds/curtains closed. That'll stop too much cold air coming into the house while you clear the condensation. I find that leaving the window open for about 20 minutes does the trick. No idea what the RH is, but the window is clear.

A room that is chilly but dry is much better (and less prone to mould) than a room that is warm but damp.

  • Thank you. “RH” is the relative humidity, as determined by a hygrometer.

20 mins sounds about right. For me that suffices to get the humidity level back down to the 40-50% range (where it’s at before I draw a bath), but the already-condensed drops remain on the window for a bit longer. It’s that part I’m curious about – whether I’ll get rid of that quicker with window open or closed. I’ll experiment but also wanted to hear from others.

I don’t currently have an extractor fan in this bathroom but plan on having one installed.

Mop it up with a sponge along with any tiles that are wet. Much quicker than waiting for it to evaporate.

After a shower my walls and ceiling are wet with condensation. I squeegee the tiles, mop up any water and leave the window open with the radiator off. After 20-30 minutes the room is dry.
  • Haha - I know what RH is - just don't know what it measures in the room!!

Haha, sorry about that! Misread your reply.

You do that after every shower every day? Life’s too short!

I agree, you'd need another shower after doing that.

It probably takes less than two minutes. I would rather do that than have to deal with mold.
