wrong name on cheque

Someone wrote a cheque with wrong name on it
first name shortened as in Robert Rob
Last name wrong the same last name as the partner has on the joint account....i.e. the person writing cheque thought they were married ...
Will the bank accept it in Rob's account?
Will putting it in through one of those hole in the wall cheque reading machines make it more likely that it will clear..or make no difference?
I don't think so but I'm just checking (no pun intended)
Thanks

In general, they don't check the name on the cheque.0

If it has Rob instead of Robert and the right surname that would be okay, but how Im reading this post is that it says Rob then married surname, but its not the right surname, then the cheque will not be accepted and has to be amended by the cheque writer or re-done again..
Using the hole in the wall as you call it, are manually checked so would be rejected, the same goes for the paying in machines which are validated by a member of the bank staff.

Watched something on TV about this.
They did an experiment with several cheques paid into the wrong bank accounts.
They all went through.0 -
Can you not ask the person who wrote the cheque to do a Faster Payment which does not require the name and will be in your account before the cheque has cleared even if it does get accepted?0

Get the recipient to change their name by deed poll so it matches the cheque?
A deposit might be overlooked but it wouldn't be right for me to encourage that. Best to return the cheque and explain the name is incorrect. A hassle, yes, but as it stands you've been written a cheque that is of no worth to you.: )0 -
Is it the joint account where you need to deposit it? If so, why not at least try putting it in by machine or at the counter, and if rejected then return it for a rewrite. Perhaps at the counter it would be easier to explain the anomaly, if noticed.Evolution, not revolution0
