SIM for New York & travelling in USA ?

Later this year we will be flying to New York for a few days and then travelling in the USA for about three weeks (New England, California and Florida).
We have the Three's 321 PAYG and that will be very useful in the USA. The downside is making local calls which are expensive and as we will be making quite a few calls to friends etc.. it is prohibitive. We will make use of WiFi calling when we can.
We have read this group and seen that the T-Mobile 3 week Tourist SIM has been used by lots of folk. Can anyone pass an opinion on how coverage of the T-Mobile network is in other parts of the USA. Or can anyone recommend another SIM that will be better for us.
We will be buying the SIM in New York and the smartphone is unlocked and covers most of the bands used in the states.

Buy a basic PAYG in the states for local calls, they're as cheap as chips.
Walmart or similar store.
I reckon all the major networks have good coverage across the continental USA, otherwise the competition would marginalise them.0 -
Use the Skype app, pay £10.00 on credit and a call anywhere to a USA mobile or landline is .05p per minute."Man invented language to satisfy his deep need to complain."

Thanks for all the replies. I think the toss up is between AT&T and T-Mobile, but just on a bog standard card for voice calls.
@Teahfc - I guess a Skype app would work using WiFi, but I have a VOIP client on my phone for that. Really just asking about on the move reasonable voice calls within USA.0
