Ok thank you! I will contact British Gas tomorrow and liase with them.

Housing association have done nothing as of yet. I will contact them tomorrow morning and chase this up with them.

I do have a meter reading from when I moved in which is a good thing, so atleast I have a starting place with it all.

  • I would suggest WRITING to BG and informing them that you have taken over the property and give them the date and the meter readings

Send it RECORDED delivery and get a signature- this helps in the event they are incompetent and take you to court (you will have proof you tried-this is important)

Put the money you would spend on gas and electricity in to a savings account each month- you can take readings and put it in the bank- then you will not have a large bill
You will get a little interest from the bank as well

    Next step
The energy companies can go back years it you are 'at it' or they suspect fraud.
If its their incompetence they can only go back a year.

Repeat this letter every year to show you are making an effort- I know of a customer that has not had a bill in 4 years and she keeps trying to set up an account and fails miserably
She has proof she tried and keeps it.
    baldly going on...

I once rented a one year old house for a year.

The electric was metered but the gas was not.

Like you I received no bills and gave up trying after many many calls.

The fact is the meter isnt registered or something.
It makes sense being a new build.
Something to do with the builder/gasman not signing it off correctly.
The meter had a sticker on it which said something about the installer removing it.
Maybe the left sticker was the cause, not logged in the system?I dont kmow.

Previous tenants obviously received free gas too.

I enjoyed free gas for a year.

I bet the new tenants are doing the same.
