Looking for a new laptop

Hi
I'm looking for some advise from all you lovely people. I'm fed up with my existing laptop that I bought 2nd hand early this year, its rather old and not really powerful enough - it can only run Windows 95!
I've got about £400 to spend. I'm not sure that I want to get Vista yet, we have a wireless internet connection, and my partner uses Windows XP. We would want to be able to share files and don't want any incompatability issues.
I'd love to run Sims2 on my new laptop, but otherwise would mostly use it for wordprocessing and spreadsheets (I''ll get openoffice for this I think), emails and playing around on the web.
I'd like to get the best I can for the money that I have, but obviously don't want to spend money on stuff that I don't need. I'd rather buy new than 2nd hand this time round.
What would you recommend? I'm getting baffled by numbers, MHz and graphics cards types
Thanks in advance

That will allow you to do all you've said and moreIt's taken me years of experience to get this cynical0 -
Thanks - I can't see any mention of the graphics card on that laptop, and there seems to be a specfic list that will work with sims2.
http://thesims2.ea.com/help/detail.php?help_id=21 or is it more complicated than that?
