LISA question

Hubby and I are looking at actually starting to save rather than keep saying we are! I think the lifetime isa suits our needs better but I'm a bit confused on one thing

If we open a new isa prior to April can we pay in say £2/3k with potentially another £4k in the new tax year? Or can we put only £4k in during the first 12 months, despite it spanning two tax years?

Must appreciated, as my head is feeling very full and confused! :rotfl:
Total savings 2018- £7450 (includes Lisa bonus)
2019:
Regular Saver: £0.00
LISA: £0.00

It's £4k per tax year as counts towards your total annual ISA limit.
