Cheapest meals for the slow cooker

Right so far I'm loving the slow cooker. Love opening the door to the flat after a day at work and smelling that dinner is ready so I don't need to do anything but dish up
I have tried:-
Sausage casserole (sausages, onion, veg, passata and herbs)
Veg soup
Chilli
Lasagna/Shepherds pie sauce
Plain chicken thighs - the meat was then picked off and frozen for later
Chicken casserole (using some of the chicken thigh meat + stock, veg and herbs)
Pork chops in cream of mush soup
Gammon joint
Tonight it is pork chops in sweet and sour sauce
Next week it will be pork loin joint - or maybe pork casserole if I decide to chop it all up
Not too bad for just over 2½ weeks of using a slow cookerPlus I've actually eaten swede in my casseroles too
Anyone else got any cheap ideas or good recipes?working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -
You actually sound like your having fun, good for you and long may the novelty last:T.
As for cheap meals, I buy the tins of condensed soup, and pour them into any kind of cheap meat, add some veg, and it's a "home-made" casserole.
Why do the kids always have to ask what it's called. We always have "home made" casserole and "home made" soup:rotfl:. What more do they need to know

Actually, I've just remembered a really cheap meal that I used to do, and they all liked. I used to get beef olives out of farmfoods, I think they were only about 99p for 6. Add a tin of tomatoes, herbs, garlic, an onion, a selection from peppers, celery, mushrooms, sweetcorn, carrots and a tin of butter beans, basically just whatever needs using up.
serve with wholemeal pasta and crusty bread...mmmm.
Only thing is, it can be a bit greasy, but I just scoop the grease off the top. I think I'll have to buy some beef olives and try this again!Official DFW Nerd Club - Member # 593 - Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts!0 -
Thanks trying - yeah the kids always look at something new and go "what's this" very suspiciously. Mum used to call things cassulet (whatever the spelling is?) or tell us a fancy name out of the book
Mum does a "Mince Bake Italienne" which I plan to try in the SC. It's basically really tomatoey bolognaise sauce cooked put in a casserole dish then a layer of white sauce on top then buttered small squares of white bread laid on top and baked in the oven till the bread starts to crisp and brown. For years we knew it as "mind with bread on top" - only found out the proper name when I asked for the recipe :rotfl:working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0
