Cheapest meals for the slow cooker

Options
Ok well I've looked at the slow cooker index, the slow cooker recipe thread (well about 55 pages of it anyway )

My slow cooker should be arriving on Friday and I have never used one before ;)

My plan is to do casseroles etc so that food is ready when I get home from work - so about 10 hours cooking time.

I have suddenly realised I should now be able to buy chicken thighs and do them in the SC and then easily pick the meat off for using in meals etc. Is this cheaper than doing a whole chicken though?

Also, a value turkey drumstick at 99p should work in the SC and then I can make turkey curry cheaper than my usual which is using turkey breasts?

I bought it for time saving mostly due to working full time but now need to know:
What other cheap options can I choose for meals in the SC?

(I really don't like fatty meat at all and trying to lose weight)

    Hi

I make veggie chilli in mine.
Half a pack of quorn mince, a bit of onion (I cut up loads at once and freeze)
a tin of tomatoes, a tin of beans, a handful of lentils and a pack of chilli mix, stir, add some water, not much because the slow cooker doesn't lose much liquid so only add it as needed.

Also don't forget that you can make rice pudding, tapioca etc

You can also do things like steaming steak puddings and sweet puddings but they do tend to come out quite heavy (that might be my cooking though)

Oh and soups of course (mine tend to be the remnants of veg in the fridge and a few herbs)

You may have noticed that I quite like my SC

    Have fun

Cheap stewing lamb makes a delicious lamb hot pot, even without the potatoes, and oxtail caserole is delicious too. These can sometimes generate a lot of fat which will come to the surface of the stew but if left until cold it can be easily scooped off, saving a lot of calories. Best to cook them the previous day and either leave in the fridge or in a cool room so that the surplus fat can solidify.

Thanks guys. Need all the tips I can get ;).

Already planning making stock, whole chicken, gammon joint and lots of soup ;)

Also planning a wide mouth flask so I can make soup overnight and then just scoop some into a flask in the morning, ready for my lunch :D

Hoping that this will finally help me reach the grocery challenge target that I miss every month

Thank you for this idea! I'd never thought of it before! My husband won't eat meat off the bone. Not even if I make Southern fried chicken in my cast iron skillet. :( But! Slow-cooking the lot of them with a bit of seasoning, maybe some wine, and some onions, would mean that all I'd have to do is pick the tender juicy dark meat off the bone and then serve it like that! :)

I make bbq pulled pork with mine. (You know, when the big pork roasts are on sale really cheap?) I put it in the slow cooker, dump a bottle of BBQ sauce over it, and let it cook all day. An hour before dinner time, I'll shred the meat up with a fork and stir in some more BBQ sauce. Let that cook in a bit, and then serve on baps!

I don't like eating meat off the bone - too much fiddling about - and yet I don't mind stripping the meat off when I do a roast and then making something with the meat. Just don't like messing about when eating it ;)
