iZettle and the likes are making card acceptance worthwhile for startups and small businesses.

Morrisons will accept a card for a 50p newspaper. All the proper big chains will it's only the small businesses and one man bands that still see cards as the enemy.
It would cost a small business money to sell you the 50p newspaper via a bank card, even debit, because the profit margin on papers is tiny. They would literally be better off refusing the sale. That's what leads to minimum spends and the hostile attitude towards cards.

I just used a newspaper as an example. They will accept the card for for a 30p croissant from from the bakery counter too.

I think my smallest credit card transaction was something like 4p or 6p, in TKMaxx. I bought products amounting to just under £50, and paid using a £50 gift card, but I wanted a carrier bag as well which took the total to a few pennies over £50, so paid the difference on my credit card.

Why? There's no limit so you already know it's going to work fine...
You can, and I have numerous times, spent as little as a penny on cards.
