Before anyone in this situation panics (I'm sure they won't) no way does this happen in the workplace or even in a doctor's surgery or hospital.

I'm not sure that's necessarily the case. It may just be part of their 'normal' process for anyone off sick for an extended period.

That would certainly be the case for most of our employers. Unless the absence is "obvious" - by that I mean that there is no realistic chance the person could work in any capacity at any time, they would ask for medical reports. However, unfortunately it doesn't matter, since the chances of them finding out that they have been told something that isn't true are high, whichever is the case.
