Not sure about the scope for that sort of stuff, Austin.
But with regard to your last couple of questions I am very keen to mention that I have an enhanced CRB check and in all my online ads I mention my age. The fact that you have good experience will matter a lot more to parents than your age and marital status.*removed by forumteam - please do not advertise in signatures*0 -
Hi, I'm a primary school teacher so have CRB check. Did my undergrad in English lang and lit.
Anybody have any experience in English tutoring? Where would you start in finding out the syllabus etc?
There is a secondary school round the corner from me.
Thanks0 -
Best place for the syllabus would be the examining boards' websites. AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC.
You can often find quite a lot of past papers and specimen papers there too.

I've decided to take a bit of a gamble and pay for an advert in the local paper. Just over £20 for the ad to be in for 3 weeks (it's a weekly paper).
If I get two sessions out of it it will have been worth it.
It appears in the paper for the first time tomorrow... fingers crossed. I'll keep everyone updated how much response it gets.*removed by forumteam - please do not advertise in signatures*0 -
do you have any community use high schools near you?
I work in one and we are always looking for enthusiatic tutors for our evening classes. the classes are usually quite small and all adults or teenagers who actually want to be there. You would earn more tutoring privately i supose, we only pay about £18 an hour, but we get a lot of interest from people wanting teaching experience but without having to get a pgce or equivalent.
if someone approaches us to teach a subject we dont already provide a class for we will put the word out to drum up interest and get a class started as soon as we can.0 -

I have a degree in English, postgraduate qualifications in publishing (proofreading, editing etc), I write plays for children and have helped them learn lines etc at an amateur dramatics group (I am held in awe as 'the man who writes the words' LOL). I've not done much else with children apart from working briefly as a classroom assistant, which I enjoyed but found a bit wearing.
I'm not really interested in schoolteaching because of what I can gather (from friends who are/were teachers) about red tape, discipline and educational theory, or lack of, in schools.
I would like to offer some kind of help with reading/reading aloud/handwriting etc for younger children (say, primary school age) on a one-to-one basis. It would be informal and wouldn't be directly concerned with passing exams etc. I wouldn't expect to be paid full tuition rates but would something like £10 a hour be realistic?
Is there much scope for this do you think, or is this kind of thing offered free of charge in schools these days? I'd like to start out small and see how things progress.
I'm happy to get a CRB check (as a single man in his thirties I'm probably a prime candidate for suspicion) but does one mention this in publicity etc or just wait until one is asked?
Regarding fees, agencies will standardise these (and charge too much in my opinion).
Just come across an interesting site where students can compare tutors (on price etc) and not pay agencies anything. Also there seems to be a lot of scope to explain what you do and who you are, so parents will trust you. Here's the website:
www.thetutorpages.com
Here's the link to the article where I read about it:

Regarding CRB, it's tricky because you can't get a CRB certificate as an individual, only through an institution. It's not a legal requirement for tutoring, though.
Hope this helps,

So far it's looking like money down the drain. Not had a single response to my ad. :-(*removed by forumteam - please do not advertise in signatures*0 -

Harry.
About a month ago I registered on thetutorpages.com and also on beanbaglearning.com and schoolofeverything.com . They are all free. So far I've had two enquiries from thetutorpages and nothing from the other two, but it's probably worthwhile registering with all of them.

Thetutorpages charges £19.50 for registration... I don't think I'll bother.*removed by forumteam - please do not advertise in signatures*0

Sorry, I forgot that I'd had to pay for the tutorpages. I've now had four enquiries from there, still none from beanbag and schoolforeverything. I'm in SE London, so maybe where you are is important.0
