Credit check decline by EE - even I have no debt?

I have been recently declined by EE for a sim-only contract, checked my credit score on Clearscore afterwards and it is 398/700 which is "in good ground" as I don't have any loans or debt, and paid all my bills on time with DD, which really does confuses me...
Based on my reading on the internet, I should not bother with applying for phone contracts for another 6 months, is this really the case? And what could I do to improve my score, as I am about to move house in order to be closer to work, which takes a hit on the score as well?
Anyone here has got any good suggestions or recommendations on what should I do to ensure I will pass next time?

As far as the meaningless scores go 398 is not good, it is just above the UK average. Mine is 483 and has taken a big hit lately due to my massive (stoozed) CC borrowing.
You need to look at the meat of the report. What is showing for open accounts, any bad marks ? It may be that you do not have much of a history or it could be, as has been seen many times about EE, they simply could not match your details with a recognised credit file due to bad form filling in store.0 -
I would probably contact all the credit reference agencies (use the link from moneysavings expert for Experian) and find out if all the information is correct (i.e electroral role, etc). As perverse as it sounds, having no debt can also go against you. Credit lenders like to see a history of regular payments to decide your credit worthiness.
I would not put much stock into your credit score as lenders typically use their own criteria when assessing applications. Might be worth also writting to EE to find out why you were declined, although they might just make some vague reference to the info on your credit file.
If declined for credit, its best to wait at least 6 months before applying again; futher applications could have a detrimental impact on your overall credit rating.House deposit..............£30000 :j0 -
As above, the number of the score really is meaningless although I use it as a guide so if it drops I’ll take a look at the meat of the report to see why and ensure it’s accurate data. You really need to look into the report more as you could have something in there that’s bad but has wrongly been put on by a mistake.
There’s a vast range of things what effects your credit score and chance of getting credit... it could be something as simple as not being on the elector register. Also if I was you I’d ask EE who they used to check your credit file because bisarely enough you report could differ from each agencie.
Personally I believe credit cards are good for building up a credit file but remember to pay it off in FULL and don’t let it build up too much!Debt Free Wanabe #StartSmallDreamBig £8419/£84190 -
A few things to add:
I am on the electoral roll, but it doesn't show on my credit file?!
I already have a credit card, but it was just a card that came with my HSBC student account, and that's like the only negative on my credit as it has a £500 limit (again because it was student)0 -

It might be that you're not registering as being on the electoral roll. For most companies that is used as a basic ID verification. Check the other CRAs to ensure that you are and if it is only this one where you're not then contact them to get your file amended. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. I also checked Clearscore again and my record has updated and corrected. Could the only reason of rejection as this is my first ever mobile contract application? (I have been paying on a broadband contract that was renewed for the second time last year)
Oddly enough, I even managed to apply to BA AMEX card today! What sort of commitment is EE looking at???? :think:0 -
I recently got declined by both Three and Virgin (there is a thread I started on here), one month apart. And the really annoying thing is neither have left any search on my credit record at all so who the hell knows why they declined meTrying to get on top of finances one step at a time0

Have you checked all 3 of your credit files? If you've only checked 1 then the searches might show on 1 or both of your other credit files...not that the search will tell you why you were declined.0
