Choosing a Conveyancing Solicitor

I have been getting quotes from local solicitors for conveyancing.
Of the 3 I choose, none are within the range in the MSE crib sheet. The property is about £0.5m with a deposit and mortgage.
One I found out will charge more if I want a shorter period between exchange and completion, one was very high, close to £1000 and the other was rather rude before me paying my money (and expensive) so am not going to use them, as I refuse to pay money and be treated rudely.
Homeward Legal had a quote of £700 and I also used moneysupermarket's comparison site (and was quoted £500) but the firm is in Bedlington, nowhere near NW London.
What should a reasonable charge be and would anyone recommend someone around London?
Also, for the ID checks do you have to be there in person?
thanks

Online firms will be cheaper, but if it goes wrong your going to be on the phone to a call centre.
I work with an online firm and a "local" firm, although theyre not local to me, they are in Liverpool and I am in Manchester. The online firm is for those who want cheap and cheerful, the local firm is for people who want someone I know and speak to and give them an ear bashing if they start dragging their feet.
Make sure the quotes you get include disbursements.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it. thanks ACG, but if you are a purchaser how do they do the fraud checks from afar.
I have some more quotes (Yorkshire and Manchester) but I am not travelling up there!
Also why do the search pack fees vary so much?0 -
They can usually do digital ID checks - you give them your DL number or passport number etc, and a fee (usually around £12), and they can run the ID checks without you being there in person.Total Debt October '14 (LBM) = £38,287.28Target = New House in 2017!Paid off so far: £19587Still to go: £18,7000

I was required to send them my passport or photocard driving license, and one of the usual proofs of address.0

Look around locally for a smaller firm. They will generally be cheaper and more friendly/approachable than the big ones employing 10s of solicitors.
Just make sure they are on your lender's list if getting a mortgage.
