External gas meter - box repairs?

Hi

My gas meter is on the external wall of my house in a very inconvenient location, my husband can't access it because the access point is too small!

Any way, it is housed in a protective box but requires repair/replacement due to weathering.

1) Who is responsible for repair of the box, us or the utility provider?
2) I would rather it was moved inside next to the electric meter, I've no idea why it is positioned where it currently is - how do we go about this & what is the possible expense?

You are responsible for both the box and moving the meter. Moving the meter is done through your gas carrier or approved contractor and is pretty expensive.

Does the replacement of the box need to be done by a gas engineer? Does it involve disconnecting the meter? Have seen something online that appears to fit over the existing meter box carcass which looks more simple and doesn't seem to involve removing the meter.

    Thanks

If you can get the new box on without fiddling with any of the gas pipes, then you're fine. It's only really a cover to keep the weather off the meter. It's not gas-tight anyway.

Obviously, if you have to start unscrewing gas pipes, then that's a job for a registered gas fitter.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
  • If it’s a case of weathering then a pot of exterior paint will sort it.

Register yourself with your supplier for a smart meter. Moving the meter will cost you loads of money.
I have had problems with my smart meter, I believe that is because I also have solar panels.

The meter box hinges when failed can be repaired by drilling four holes and threading electrical tie straps through. Did this 10 years ago on mine and still good. Use the bigger ties about a foot long and trim to length after fitting:A
