Problems with Dell PC

We have a Dell PC and it's a bloomin nightmare! Everything works fine, provided it's Dell! We can't plug our memory stick in, we can't plug our own printer in, we can't plug our webcam in, we can't plug our video camera in (with our wedding on it). We've rung the (no)help desk and got nowhere. They told us to ring their other help desk (which incidently is a premium rate!) It just keeps coming up with Hardware not recognised (or something like that).

Anyone know how we can get the stupid thing to let us use our peripherals?

Have you checked the device manager to see if there is a problem with the driver? Control panel, system, hardware then device manager. Any problems normally have a yellow triangle against them...
:confused:I have nothing better to do!!!!

As emotional as this may be for you, it might be prudent to include some pertinant details such as:

What Operating System your using, Which model of PC, Which hardware (specifically) you're trying to connect to the system.

Is this the error you receive:

A USB device is not recognized if you attach it immediately after your Windows XP-based computer comes out of standby or hibernation

Also what did you do to the computer to start it behaving this way?

It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.
  • It's entirely possible that some internal parts will be manufacturer specific, though i've not seen this for a long time (since Elonex was around). On the outside however, it's unlikely that your PC needs a DELL peripheral.

I'd check the hardware panel to make sure your USB / USB hub devices are working correctly. When you plug in a USB device, what actually happens? Does it chunder for a while and claim it needs a driver, or does it do absolutely nothing. Any messages??

Lots of questions that I can't answer from work but will check when I get home! Some I can and will answer now.

ABH - We're using Windows XP. That's not the error message I get. I'll check the actual one this evening. I didn't do anything to the computer other than plug a USB cable in (the first time I tried, the other end was attached to my Canon Bubblejet printer.)

Jonny Thunder - I haven't checked the panel, but our wireless router for example works fine through it. For the things that don't work, the bubble will pop up on the bottom right of the screen saying new hardware detected, then it will chunter for a bit, then nothing. With the printer I tried to install the drivers but it wouldn't let me.
  • Try removing Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition if it is installed. I've seen problems with USB flash drives with this application installed.....

Are they WinXP compatible? Can't you install them in legacy mode?
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/bb456991.aspx though it maybe a bit extreme for a printer.

Here's a list of usb related solutions:
