When I arrived in Cairo there was a counter in the arrivals area where we bought our visas. These were then checked before we left the airport. This was some years ago so it may be different now.

I wonder what the situation is for accompanied children. Do they need their own visas, at a reduced price maybe, or are they covered by their parents' visas?

Luckily we do not have any children travelling with us but thanks for taking the time to reply.:T
  • We went to Marsa Alam for New Year. Visa was £22 each (also $25). We paid in Sterling - £44, so make sure you have some pound coins as any change is given in Egyptian Pounds (which you can probably get rid of over your holiday anyway).

We went on a TUI package and read on TA before we went that the TUI rep (who was herding people to the TUI desk for the visa) charge £5 more. We bought ours at the bank/currency bureau.

Thanks for the info,i presume they round it up to the nearest £ and also do they accept " used " notes, that is not brand new notes.:)

New notes not required. Cards not accepted. Use the airport bank, don't be persuaded to go to an agent who will charge more (even those wearing a uniform will charge inflated price). Do not follow the herd. As you enter the airport look to your left and go to the small row of bank desks to get your visa then go straight to the back of the arrivals hall to immigration control, At the bank desks the visa can be paid for in any currency - US Dollars best as this removes any confusion over exchange rates. At the same bank desks you can change sterling into Egyption pounds if you need to.

Don't listen to the 'rep' until you get through with your visa.

You might need odd bits if you're tipping or want to go on any trips (they will depend where you're staying). I went a few years ago, the quad bikes are a good trip or buggies. Didn't rate the swimming with dolphins trip that much. Or if you want a massage. The shopping mall isn't bad to get to in a taxi, just have your wits about you. Same with their main harbour bit where Hard Rock Cafe is. Can be a few good days out if you want to head out

As mentioned, $25 buy at the bank kiosks, everyone, adults, children and babies all need one. Egyptian currency is not available in the UK, just take UK notes (£20 best) the new plastic ones are hit and miss if accepted , change the cash in the hotel atm.
