Morrisons Match 'n More Card Scam?

My 82 year old sister-in-law received a phone call last night purporting to be from Morrisons. The caller said she was due a £50 voucher and proceeded to ask her a few 'security' questions. They knew her name, address and the fact she had a Match 'n More card. Fortunately, when they asked for her date of birth she became suspicious and refused to give the information, whereupon the caller put the phone down. She then called me and I told her it was most likely a scam and she should not respond to any further calls or contact. This morning I contacted Morrisons and they know nothing about a £50 voucher scheme, so it certainly seems like a scam.

My concern is that, how did the scamster know my sister-in-laws name, address, telephone number and that she had a Match 'n More card? Have Morrisons been hacked?

Name address and telephone number can sadly be found in many places.

The Match N more will most likely just be pot luck, calling people randomly asking if they have various cards.

Morrisons Match n More has been Morrisons More for some time. So a phone call from Morrisons about a Match n More card is not going to happen.

If they're using pot luck, it's strange they've picked Morrisons - I'd have thought Clubcard was a far more likely scheme for people to be members of. Unless they are particularly local scammers, targetting one specific area where there is a Morrisons nearby.

I would check your sister-in-law hasn't lost any of her credit/debit cards, this sounds a bit too targeted to be a generic scam.

To my mind the biggest fiddle with this card is that it started out as match and more matching with Aldi and Lidl as well as the others. The match part of it brought me a fiver just about every other shop. Removing the match element brought it down to a fiver if hell freezes over. I solved that by moving my shop to Aldi and Lidl

We do keep emphasising the need to be vigilant and telling her and her husband about the latest scams. Thankfully, because of their ages they are not on the internet.

Maybe worth reporting to Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline who can inform local Trading Standards.

if it is affecting a few people it's good to put it on their radar. Especially, if as Thumbremote says, they are targeting a local area.
