Travel insurance for self drive to France

  • I'll have to check out the hi viz jackets. 2 came with a kit and hubby got 2 from work for the kids - we keep them under the drivers seat. Thanks everyone

In Italy, when walking past parked vehicles, we noticed that drivers kept them on the parcel shelf, visible through the rear window - maybe to satisfy passing police that they were carrying them ?

On the driving abroad aspect, this bank account offers worldwide travel insurance and vehicle breakdown cover for £13 a month - and fee free withdrawals from ATMs.

Worth investigating to see if it meets your needs.

Barclays does the same for £10.50. No fee free debit card though.

I’ve never bothered with the breathalysers. Apparently, even if you caught without them, there is nothing that they can do. I’ve never had to put this to the test though.

The other requirements, such as the in-cabin high viz vests and warning triangle etc, are actually a good idea in my opinion so I routinely carry them in the UK.

It does indeed. I used to go to France 4 times (only day trips mind) each year and always had the above.
Whom I went over with phoned up his insurance and made sure it was covered, although one time we got extra cover.

But you still taking a risk without insurance if you ended up in hospital and incurred extra costs or at worst needed repatriation (alive or dead). Very unlikely but these would be extremely expensive if they happened.

My parents (60s/70s) were on holiday in France last year when my father was taken ill and had to spend several days in hospital before he was well enough to fly back. They ended up claiming quite a bit on their travel insurance even though most of the hospital costs were covered by EHIC.
