How much would it cost to have a new electric fuse box fitted and would any other work have to be done as part of the job?

As for the other work no one can say until they see the state of you current electrics and test results.
Unliekly to take a day unless something was up. Unlikely to even take half a day.0 -
It is likely to take more than half a day. In addition to replacing the distribution board the outgoing circuits would need to be tested to ensure that ADS requirements are satisfied to ensure that the new work (the installation of the DB) has not impaired the safety of the existing installation, and that the existing installation does not impair the safety of the DB installation.Unliekly to take a day unless something was up. As for additional works no-one can answer that without seeing the installation or sight of a reliable previous Report on the condition on the electrical installation.0 -

I would say that that is atypically cheap. Generally I would expect (in the absence of additional remedial work) a cost in the region of £350-400 for the replacement of a domestic DB.0 -

Yes, probably cheap because all electrics are sorted out and a safety cert obtained afterwards. We know the 2 guys who do ours and as property developers and managing agents for rentals we put a fair bit of work their way. In the absence of any other work we pay that.
OP when getting quotes its more common to call it a mains board, distribution board or even consumer unit than a fuse box. The board will cost about £60+. You can supply your own but your sparky will probably prefer to supply and get it cheaper than you can. If you don't already have one a 100a isolation switch (rather than the old supply fuse) might be worthwhile while doing the change. Ask your electrician.
If you actually have a fuse box or even an old single RCD board the new one may well show up faults due to the sensitivity and the circuits protected by RCD will now be including the lighting circuit which on older boards had no protection. It can turn out a much bigger job than you expected. That's what I think the guys are warning you about. If it's all straightforward your luck was in.
If faults are found - and put right, its money spent making the house safer. Dual RCD boards now fitted are safer and comply with latest regulations. I don't think I have ever regretted getting this sort of work done. I imagine quite a few people wish they had.Mr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years. Depends on the number or circuits.
In a simple domestic setup with a dual RCD box it would take 3 hours or so. Maybe you live in a mansion.0 -

No, just your average 3 bed semi.
Thank you all for your replies - most helpful.
I think I was expecting to pay £300-£400 if everything went smoothly with no problems along the way.0 -
I would reckon about £350 - £400 as others have said
Use a registered electrician
In Scotland
www.select.org.uk
All over UK
www.niceic.com
or
http://www.electricalcompetentperson.co.uk/
You may need bonding (earth wires to gas meter and possibly water stop valve)
Your electrician should also give the place a test and this will let you know how things arebaldly going on...0
