The way your lens is set can affect your vision and I once had two pairs of glasses, where one didn't feel right .This was because the lens was slightly rotated from the correct position and something that could not be corrected by an online company.

I have my tests done at Specsavers, as Asda do not have the ability to do a retinopathy test and I am impressed by our local branch's franchise holder,as she works part time at the eye hospital and spotted that I had the beginings of detached retinae, which righted themselves and also referred me because of an extra large floater.

I then take my prescription to Asda.(Many don't realise that you don't have to buy from where you have the eye test.)

Given that the cost to Specsavers of frames and lenses is just a few pounds, and that they sell at a massive markup of several thousand percent, there's a lot of price competition amongst the online suppliers.

As stated, the downside is the lack of fitting - crucially important if the glasses are going to do their job.

Has anyone found a way round this? Are there any online suppliers providing some sort of local fitting service (just as online tyre suppliers do)? If not, maybe there's a gap in the market.......

  • I bought 3 pairs of ordinary glasses from Specsavers yesterday and I shocked myself as I managed to barter them down and I got £45 knocked off my bill........
I didn't intend to do it, it just came out of my mouth :o

Needless to say, I was very pleased with myself once I got over the shock.

To be honest, with varifocals you get what you py for!

Mark up of several thousand percent? Really?

An error on my part - apologies. Several hundred percent markup.

Even the most specialist lenses are extremely cheap to produce and Specsavers make a massive markup.

For many years now I have had my eyes tested at Vision Express and then bought my frames and lenses from Glasses Direct. Their service is outstanding and the price is a fraction of what you would pay at a high street optician (even after I have upgraded to ultra thin lenses). Highly recommended.
