Moving with Fish Tank

We'll be (hopefully) moving house by about 30 miles in the spring and are not sure of the best way to move the fish tank. We previously moved it about 10 years ago (about 2 miles) but they were standard goldfish at the time (since migrated to outside pond) and it's now a tropical tank (heater, etc.). It's a large tank (about 250-300l - they're hubby's fish so I'm not sure of the details).

We'll need to remove the fish and then drain the tank the night before the move (or very early the next day). We previously used the large bags they give you when you buy new fish and then setup the tank asap in the new location but with a tropical tank I think it may take longer to setup and get up to temp. How long can we leave them in the bags without heating or filtration? Potentially could be up to 48 hours depending on how long it takes to get the tank setup at the other end.

Any other top tips about moving them - want to make it as stress free as possible both for the fish and us!

I remember when I moved in 2007 with a 3' tank. First visited an Aquarium shop for advice, they gave me some bags, and a polystyrene box, that normally receive fish in.
The morning of the move, caught the fish (easier said than done), lowered the water level done to about a couple of inches. No of fish per bag - depends on size and breed.

Loading tank & stand onto removal lorry, strapped in place near the cab, and fish in the car with us.

Arrive at new house (in our case only a few miles) have tank put in place, refill with warm water, add some tap water conditioner, power on, add plants, etc. Add fish in bags to regulate temperatures, after a period - when you've a good idea of the water temp. open bags, and release the fish.

    HTHs good luck.

  • I moved 2 years ago with the tropical tank a similar size,.. i ensured the tank was the last thing to be done and I had 4 removal men patiently watching me trying to catch the last few fish before they could take the tank,

I'd already been to the local fish shop and bought a large polystyrene box and a set of bags and also 2 very large water containers so that I could keep as much of the existing water as possible,.

After moving I set the tank up within an hour of getting in to the house, fish seemed fine,..

My friend paid a guy from the local fish shop to do it - totally worth it!
