  • I think the confusion about being both a named driver and the main driver is that 'named driver' normally means 'a named driver other than the policyholder'. If it is taken to mean 'any driver who is named in the policy' (as opposed to an unnamed driver covered in an any-licensed-driver policy), then someone can be both--it's just unnecessary to say they are a 'named driver', since they would have to be named to be included as the main driver.

Anyway, when my son took the car he uses off to uni, I made him the main driver while I remained policyholder: CIS did this quite happily (well, they did practically double the premium, but it's still not bad since I have transferred my 70% NCD from the family car). They made no stipulation that I shouldn't being doing it 'just in order to save money', which I find extraordinary: an insurer is free to state conditions and a premium, and it is entirely up to the customer to decide whether to accept them.

I know the bonus he is building up is only valid with CIS, and this is putting off the day when he will have to start a policy of his own, but he will be older then, and CIS for one wouldn't insure him as a 20-year-old policyholder at all.
