Manchester to Sheffield - Without Snakes or Woodhead Pass

Travelling to Sheffield and back over the weekend but at the moment both Snakes and Wood-head Pass are closed due to weather conditions, what's the next best option?

Thank you

Ben

    M62 then M1

When daughter was at Sheffield Uni I gave up with Snake and Woodhead and stuck to M62/M1.

The passes suffer from snow/ice in winter and holiday makers in summer. And of course there is Glossop to deal with.

    Travelling from Chester

As above, M1/M62, leave the passes to the sightseers. You could consider A6/A623 toward Chesterfield then up to Sheffield from there but you may have the same issues as you cross the peaks around Sparrowpit, also it's a bit out of the way I suppose.

    Or, take the train.

The woodhead pass shuts all year round when its windy.
M62 if north Manchester, A6 A623 if south.

If you can wait a bit, there should be a new road and rail tunnel in about 30 years...

Takes about half an hour to get from M1 Leeds J46 to Sheffield, probably not much more from Manc. to Leeds on M62.
  • Train.

It's about an hour from Manchester Picadilly to Sheffield.
