Let’s hope your immersion works when you need it suzie.

Making a poor system design choice based on what if my boiler breaks isn’t the way to go. The correct design for this house would be a combi boiler.

Yes, of course, but I would be very unlucky if both boiler and immersion heater failed at the same time.

I don't understand why it is a poor design choice. It is what we have used for decades and is what large houses still use.

I just don't see the fascination with combi boilers especially in older houses where the pressure might cause leaks in inaccessible places.

The OP wants the extra space, so in his case it would make sense to get rid of the airing cupboard. But for someone like me who does not, I can't see the advantage of changing to a combi apart from not having to worry about pipes in the loft freezing.

You’ve just stated 2 of the benefits of a combi boiler, dry loft and less space. They generally provide better flow rate and are pressurised so will heat the system quicker, they are sealed system so less likely to generate sludge.

They are not the solution for every house, if you have more the one bathroom then unvented hot water is the best design.

Yes, I have never said that they don't have some advantages but people also need to be told the disadvantages, just as they need to be told the advantages and disadvantages of an open vented system.

Buy a large pot and boil water on stove for bath?

Spend £20 at your local gym, do some exercise and shower there for a month?

I tried this (big pot of hot water in the bath), turns out it didn't take the addition of much cold to bring the temperature right down anyway. Adding a litre of cold to a litre of hot will yield ~50 degree water. So, rough calculations, couple of pots of hot water plus about the same of cold and the heat being drawn in to the metal bath, and you might get an inch of somewhat warm water. You could boil some more, but by the time that's done the original will be pretty cold. The whole thing was about as effective as bailing out a sinking ship with a coffee beaker. Carrying heavy pots of boiling water up the stairs isn't the safest idea either.

Local gym is probably your best option.
