Sky Broadband

Options
I've Sky broadband but I aint getting 8mb I'm getting 54mpbs. SKy tell me that it isn't in my area yet but they are charging me for 8mb. Has anyone had any experience with this? I'm gonna change providers and I am hoping that there won't be any penalty clause because they aint fulfilling their side of the agreement. Can anyone recommend anyone?? Fanks

Try http://www.broadbandchecker.co.uk/?GTSE=goog&GTKW=broadband%20availability - this will tell you what speed you should be able to get, if you can get Cable then you can get a better connection speed than with a BT line. You may find that if you can only get 54mpbs with Sky then thats all you can get with other BT line connections.

Hi lennymfo, what you have is SKY CONNECT which is a package for those who aren't in their network area. Whatever speed you get you should notice that they word it as
    Get up to 8Mb
they do not say that you will get 8mb.
If you are within 12 months of contract it looks as though you would have to pay a penalty - I have just been reading the terms and conditions on their website and it is long!

I am not on sky connect - my area is within their network. I checked my line to see what speed I would be able to get before getting their sky package and it is just under 8mb so I went for mid package, obviously you were only able to go for sky conect which is totally different.
  • Yup. We pay for up to 8mb but only get about 6mb. Yet we still have to pay for the whole hog. How much you actually get is down to your exchange and how far away you are but you pay to get the 'maximum' your line can get.

You are right, but are you talking about sky broadband or Sky Connect? Lennymfo gets is SKY CONNECT because his exchange does not at this time receive sky - well it sounds as though he is on SKY CONNECT, if he is on sky network then there is a big problem somewhere with the speed he is getting.

Ive checked the link and it gives me a green tick. Does this mean that I should be getting closer to 8mb. Am I right in saying that 54mpbs is actually dial up which if it is would suggest that there may be another problem??

54 mbs is normally the speed that your computer negotiates over the wireless network with your router, not the broadband connection speed.

If you go here and do a test what do you get?

I'm on the Sky 16 Mb package and get this at the moment (bit slow this morning).

What fermi said - 54mbps is faster than 8mbps. Usually wireless networks transfer at 50mbps, wired LANs work at around 100mbps. A fast dial-up modem would be 56kbps. If this is the speed you're getting you'd know about it cos 'tinternet would be deathly slow!

If you're going off what it says in the system tray by the clock, that'll be your wireless network speed, not your internet speed.

That's 2.6mbps. Not as fast as the 8mbps touted, but as previously said they only say up to 8mb.

Try it at different times of day & keep a log. If it's consistently underperforming email them with the details and get them to check things are up to speed at their end & the exchange.
