There are a lot of reasons someone would care. Not least because either the company could cause damage to the land/house or you could cause damage to their equipment.
After all, its not like its the only option, just usually its the cheapest (for the company anyway). You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0 -
IIRC VM (and any other company) are meant to get permission from the property owner before running lines across them, or go through various legal hoops if they need to and can't get an amicable agreement.
Now if you were feeling nasty the cable could get damaged when you next clean the guttering (do you use a scraping tool to clean the guttering from below? or lean a ladder up against the side of the house to access it).
Or you could give virgin media a ring and inform them you didn't give permission for the cable to be run across your property and could the remove it and put any damage right.
they should do that if you explain that they have done it without permission, although you may need to make a formal complaint and it could cause an issue with your neighbour.0 -
I wonder if we're going to hear from the OP again.0

Would you care to elaborate on that answer?
Though, as neilmcl points out, unless Virgin Media were intimidating the OP, or obstructing the OP in their lawful business, it wouldn't be aggravated trespass anyway. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
OP is entitled to remove the cabling from his property. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Is it really that much of a problem?
Aren't there more important things to focus on in life than where the cables go?0 -

I do agree with what you say but what if at some point you want to extend upwards or outward, change guttering or the cable makes the guttering more susceptible to blocking etc who will be responsible for costs, a formal agreement of some sort is needed that give you the right to have it removed or rerouted if requested0
