Speed Test Issues and Chrome

Options
On 100meg with virgin, using chrome browser and testing with speedtest.net - i get wireless speed of around 16meg, wired slightly better 17 or 18.

If i switch to Opera wireless 50meg and wired 100meg, other browser more in align with Opera

Tried uninstalling and reinstalling chrome - same results.

Any suggestion as to whats going on

Efficiency in the Javascript/HTML engine in the browser and the code being used on the speed test site you're using. speedtest.net has changed and uses HMTL 5 so have you tried using the new version?

Yes using the HTML 5 site

SpeedOfMe site shows 18mbs on opera, 6mbs on Chrome - both crap but still 66%worse on chrome
  • Lower Speeds in any broadband connection can be for a multitude of issues. From what it looks like you have already cleared Chrome of any Issue but somethings that will slow the speed down (both Wired and Wireless) are:

Too many devices on your network online at the time
Bandwidth hungry devices (think mobile phones, tablets, anything running Netflix and Smart TV's)
How your networking is set up
(example i have a run in the house that i can't use WiFi in so I had to use home plugs to share the network into the room that goes into a switch for two devices and PC and an Xbox - the speed is slower because of the home plugs running the network over my electric wires and the switch sharing that one connection to multiple devices)

What I suggest is the following turn off all other network devices completely, boot up your pc and run a speed test with just that on on both Google Chrome AND Internet Explorer/Edge whatever your preference is. You can pick whatever speed test site to use but use the same one on both browsers for consistency. May be worth doing the best of 3 on both browsers too to get an average.
