Housing benefit and capital

Hi all,
How long does the Council continue to take into account capital for the purposes a Housing Benefit claim?
So, eg: you declare £12,000 capital today - do they continue to assume that you have that capital ad infinitum for the purpose of a housing benefit claim - or does it reduce over time?
Or, do you contact them if the money is spent?
And if you do, do they then reset the capital to £0?
Hope that makes sense!?

You can notify them on a regular basis that your capital has gone down but may need to justify your expenditure so as not to fall under the deprivation of capital rules.0
