Survey before extension

We are in process of buying new house with plans to extend. Looking at the different options for valuations/surveys as part of mortgage. If planning to extend is it much better to go for a full building survey? Anyone with experience or is a surveyor can offer any advice on things to look for or ask as part of survey if planning to extend?
Thanks

A surveyor will report on what's there, but they cannot be asked to predict what might be there in a few years time or the best options for extension. That's the job of an architect, perhaps in tandem with a structural engineer.
At a very basic level, a surveyor would know, say, that a roof might be unsuitable for a loft conversion, but then so would a builder or even a clued-up member of the public.0
