Santander and my 6 year relationship

Go easy on me guys as I don't post too often....

Just wanted to get some opinions from people to see if anyone thinks I have any grounds to complain or if I should just pay for my crimes!

Towards the end of 2014/beginning of 2015 I developed a somewhat idiotic gambling problem, it put me in a lot of financial difficulty and through Credit Cards, Overdrafts and Payday Loans I racked up around 40k of debt, not a part of my life I look back on with fondness.

I've paid them all off now, and 3 years on I'm a lot more financially stable. However, I still seem to get refused for most forms of credit, and when I came to switch my mortgage last year, I couldn't find anyone who would accept me and had to stick with my provider.

I used StepChange to pay back all the debt, and this meant that I did fail to adhere to the original credit agreements put in place, so I understand that all my creditors had the right to mark my credit file to reflect this.

However, they didn't, most noted that I was in debt management, but marked my payments as ok. Santander did the same for a while, but then for the final 6 months I was paying them off, they hit me with defaults, and this seems to be the reason no one will lend to me.

Now I'm not saying what they did wasn't by the book, but with some 10-15 creditors who all took different action, it seems unfair that I'm not going to be able to move past this until post 2020.

Anyone think I have grounds to complain? I did pursue it briefly closer to the time it occurred but I didn't think it would have such a negative affect for so long.

No. The ongoing default flag was correct - although they should have been applied every month, not just the last 6.

It won't be making much difference, with the DMP and defaulted accounts still on file. Everything will drop off at the same time, assuming the original default dates are around the same time.

Start with the basics, and build up a credit history with a sub prime card if that's all you can get, as well as maintaining the mortgage correctly.

Having said all that, nothing to stop you trying a speculative appeal if it makes you feel better. Worst that will happen is they add in the missing defaults which won't make any difference either.

The Santander defaults alone are not why you are being declined. The two years of idiocy and being on a DMP plan are having a massive negative impact and will continue to do for a few years. Repaying the debt doesn't alter what happened and the negative effect it will have.
