Well yeah, but what other common instances can you think of where people use large amounts of electricity at night?
Depends how you define 'large' and how you define 'night'.

My friend switched to E7 last summer. At 30% 'night' consumption she breaks even. 'Always on' appliances more or less achieve this by 7/24=0.29. Her big consumers are the washing machine (daily) and dishwasher (every other day). Both have inbuilt timers and are always run at night.

In the Summer 'night' ends at 8:30, in the Winter at 7:30. She gets up at 6am, the kids not long after. There are showers and coffee and breakfasts being made. Everyone is out of the house by 7:40 leaving it empty for the rest of the day. It is not uncommon for people to be up at that time of the day and be out of the house before E7 hours end, even though they wouldn't call that 'night'.

E7 is not cheaper for many people, but it is wrong to associate E7 with having storage heaters if that means people don't look at their personal consumption and just think whether it might be cheaper. After all, when TOU tariffs become the norm it is something we'll all have to be thinking about.

Judging by Iresa s flexi 5 Eco 7 electric rates virtually everyone is better off with an Eco 7 meter at any night consumption percentage.11.5 day rate and 8 p night (21p a day sc ) That is in South Yorks area
Nearly everyone is paying 11 .5 p kwh or more for 24 hrs day rate.
If only I could rely on Iresa being around for many years with these sorts of rates, it would pay me to get an Eco 7 meter in even with gas central heating.
Many towns near large Northern power stations such as Worksop/Mansfield area had eco 7 meters fitted in many areas and housing estates with gas connections from day one simply to keep the night shift at the power station busy seeing as they can t shut down the generators.
Eco 7 is not just about all all electric houses.
My current Eon best fixed tariff on electric is higher than Iresas Eco 7 tariff no matter what percentage of night units I use

I wonder if Ebico's Night Owl tariff might suit o/p. If his car consumes 12 kwh per night, and his house uses 8kwh per day, it'll cost about 50p per day extra for the units. (Not sure about the standing charge.)
