PIP and working?

Options
Hi all,

I have been in receipt of DLA (now PIP) for a number of years. but in the past few weeks i have been offered a full time job and feel that i am ready to try get out there and work again, i understand i will have to declare a change of circumstances, but my care needs and requirements are still all required due to my on going health and mental health issues. Will i be able to work and still receive my award or will i lose my claim? (i understand it may be reassessed through the change of circumstances)

I am a little confused with the process, certain websites (Citizens Advice for example) say there is no need to inform DWP of any work changes, but to me that doesn't make sense and sounds like fraud? but even the GOV websites states PIP as 1 benefit that cant be stopped if you commit fraud? (doesn't make sense right??)

apologies if I've worded this wrong, if anything needs explaining i will try my best to explain it more straight forward

thank you!

PIP is not means tested. It has nothing to do with your ability to work. There is no requirement to inform DWP.

    Hi, on the Government website it says;

'Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is usually paid every 4 weeks. It’s tax free and you can get it whether you’re in or out of work.

You’ll need an assessment to work out the level of help you’ll get. Your rate will be regularly reviewed to make sure you’re getting the right support.

You need to tell DWP straight away if there’s a change in your personal circumstances or how your condition affects you.

If you get PIP and you work, you might also be able to get the disability element of Working Tax Credit (up to £3,000 a year, or up to £4,290 if your disability is severe). Contact the tax credits helpline to find out.'

I would inform them of your change in circumstances and they will reassess and adjust the amount that you receive if necessary.

    I hope this helps :)

Basically you need to consider what points you were awarded for the PIP descriptors and whether the job you are doing contradicts anything that you have been awarded PIP for.

Whilst PIP can be awarded to those in work the descriptors still apply.

If you are 'testing the waters' so to speak, it would be perfectly reasonable to wait for a period to see how you cope before notifying of a change of circumstances.

    Good luck!
  • Still SO confused with this, i just called PIP helpline and the lady on the phone told me it doesn't constitute a change of circumstances, so i thought i'd get a 2nd opinion and have it clarified and the 2nd person told me the complete opposite of the 1st!

Has anyone else been in a similar position?

you can work on full PIP on both sides, they would in an assessment ask you how you cope at work. i.e. how adaptions are made to support you. Im not sure on if you werent working before the assessment and then want to work though? maybe worth putting it in writing once you know but as far as i am aware this is the one benefit not means tested as you can be disabled and still work in some conditions :) Good luck in your new job if you do take it x
