cleaning old quarry tile floor

I have uncovered an old quarry tile floor underneath lino. The tiles are covered in all sorts, cement, adhesive, levelling compound etc but I'm looking to try and gradually clean it up. Can anyone recommend a particular product or tools which will do this job best? I realise its going to take a lot of elbow grease! But what else do I need?
