Toyota Aygo

I'm interested in buying one of these for my wife does anyone know if they are 5 seater or only 4 as from looking at some pics it looks like there is only 2 seats belts at the back.

Also she is a new driver so I would like to keep all the costs to a minimum is insurance fairly cheap on this and what about maintenance costs is there any common faults with them?

    They are four seaters.

Don't assume insurance will be cheap - lots of new drivers buy them, new drivers have more claims, this increases insurance!

My wife paid less for insurance on her Mercedes than she did on her Aygo.

Re faults you haven't stated which version you are talking about. If are talking of an original from 2005 to about 2010 they leaked badly.

Check for water ingress - the key area being under the spare wheel in the boot as they leaked around rear lights, they also leaked around doors so check under carpets.

For newer models have a look at the owners club website for re-occurring problems.

Irrespective of the number of seat belts it’s a narrow car and wouldn’t be a suitable car for regularly carrying five people or even irregularly for more than a few miles.. From memory it only has two sets of isofix fittings in case you were thinking of 3 kids in the back. I’ll check it out later

OK checked yes 2 Isofixes and no room in between the two seat belts to fit anyone except perhaps Mini Me in.

Mrs AJ had two in a row, still have the latest one, very reliable, in fact just one issue fixed under warranty, no water leaks on either, but if you did get one, the auto version has a horrible gear change and I wouldn’t recommend.

My elderly mother has 14 plate one (with only 5k on the clock). I drive it occasionally. It is small and a bit 'cheap' inside but is light and pleasant enough to drive. It doesn't have much power so hills can be a slog especially if you haven't anticipated and dropped a gear or two. I've made quite a few 50 mile cross country trips in it and it is quite fun trying to get the most out of it. For local work it is ideal.

On early cars the clutches were underspecced, but these will have been replaced by now. Water pumps seem to be a weak area, but all parts are cheap so not really a big issue.

They must have been made from paper!

The Aygo badge has been on two completely different cars.

    2005-2014 Aygo/Citroen C1/Peugeot 107
    2014-date Aygo/Citroen C1/Peugeot 108

Neither are massively spacious in the back or boot - and both just have a pair of rear belts. If you're thinking of regular rear seat occupancy, go up a size.

There are few cars that size with 5 seat belts

We went for the Hyundai i10, one of the reasons being it has 5 seats as standard. We have found they are fine for carrying 3 children in the back age range up to 14. The more other children we can give a lift to, the more favors we can call in at a later date!

Another option is the Fiat Panda, 5 seats were an option when we have looked previously

So could we get done for carrying 3 people in the back them even though it looks like 3 seats?

Yes because all passengers must be in seat belts!
  • My wife has a 16 plate Aygo Excite which she likes. It has the Toyota 5 year warranty which can be extended. Service costs are good as well.

She had a Skoda Citigo before which was a more solid car but she prefers the Aygo apart from missing her heated seats!
