I've backed out of the finance a couple of times :-)

This isn't a PCP/HP agreement, it's a lease. Having said this OP PCH is still covered by the Consumer Credit Act and as such you should still be able to back out under the 14 day cooling off period.

Well, I emailed yesterday, saying I wanted to back out, but haven't heard anything today.
It's not the end of the world if I can't get out of it - I'll just use the local dealer next time.

A verbal contract is just as binding as a written one. The problem is proving what was verbally agreed. The fact that no money has changed hands yet gives you a considerable advantage, in that if they want to pursue compo, then they have to sue you. Most unlikely, they would normally just retain the deposit, had you paid one.
