What to do with old £5 notes in 2018

A few weeks ago, a staff member of my local Tesco took an "old" fiver, the one with the Duke of Wellington on the back https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2xmHZSKb2aA/UKqi3E4ZoLI/AAAAAAAAKko/1ErL7lHcEdA/s640/British+five+Pounds+Sterling+note%252C+Queen+Elizabeth.jpg ! He was told off by his manager who didn't know what to do with it. I said I'd give him a new fiver for it.
Turns out the manager got suspicious and decided the "safest" thing to do was cut it up and throw it away....0
