Tax Credits - New Situation

Hi,
I'm due to start a new job soon which will be a fairly significant drop in pay over my previous job. In my past situation I was not eligible for tax credits, but the new salary will mean I will be entitled to them.

I've completed the calculation online, assuming my new salary and it shows a 4 weekly credit amount of £185. However the online figures it request are for 2016-7, for which I would not be eligible for any payments.

Am I able to start a claim for payments when I begin my job, or would I need to wait for a complete tax year to pass first?

Thanks
Adam

  • Request for online tax credit application form. When the form arrives , fill the form and return to hmrc.

After three weeks , contact HMRC and request to calculate tax credit based on current tax year income.

Tax credits is based on the previous year’s income unless the current year income increases/decreases by £2,500.

Eg last year £20,000 this year £10,000 tax credits calculated on £12,500

As said, complete the claim form and call once processed to report a change to this year’s income.
