Hi all, is it still the case that I can't switch energy provider while I have debt on the account? It's coming down but taking ages and I could pay more towards it if I switched ?

It depends on how much you owe. If the supplier doesn’t block your transfer, they it will expect the debt to be paid off in full. New suppliers will not take on a credit meter debt: they are in the business of supplying energy not offering loans. I appreciate that this is no comfort to those who are blocked from switching. All you can do is make sure that you are on your supplier’s cheapest tariff. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. The rules on switching with debt are all available online. Prepayment meters I think, are allowed to switch with £250 in debt but its a few years since this question was asked on here so double check if you are prepay.0
