Natwest cancelled a direct debit

Just received a letter to say, that the direct debit against my December 17 M&S credit card statement, direct debit due 8th January, was returned unpaid and the direct debit facility cancelled.

I have already paid off the full statement by debit card, a week or more before it was due. I normally do pay it off rather than let the payment come out by direct debit, so it's possible that it's been a good while, since the direct debit, has been claimed.

Is there a time limit, where because a direct debit hasn't been claimed, that a bank will just cancel the direct debit?
