I have some new untreated skirting boards in the bathroom and I want to paint them white, do I need to use primer, undercoat then top coat, or can I get away with just using topcoat?

Treat and knots, a combined primer undercoat then top coat is the least you shoukd be doing.0

I have just painted bare wood in the past, but you may still need more than one coat.0

Thanks guys! I’ve got some combined. I’ve been meaning to do this for 15 years but will finally start tomorrow.0

If you water based it will be done in a day.0

Don't make the mistake of using an oil-based primer, then trying to give it a top coat of water-based paint. The top coat won't stick. If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
Second coat of primer is drying now- hope to have it all done and dusted by lunchtime.0

I'm not sure you have given the skirting enough time to "settle in" maybe another year or so (or until that strange noise in your ear got unbearable). :rotfl:
If it is MDF it is usually pre-primed so under coat and top coat will be OK.
Take your time!If at first you don't succeed, sky diving is not for you!0 -

I know! When the kitchen and bathroom fitters finished in 2003 I was so fed up with the mess I just cleaned the house and never got round to finishing it. The bare wood looked really good and natural but it was never intended and I always meant to paint it. It’s all finished now after two coats of gloss and it looks really good so I’m very happy.
Edit. Three coats.0
