I think, Malthusian, that the idea is that it gives more years in which the daughter may end the relationship. It may not work, in which case, nothing is lost, but it may - and these kind of relationships often end. And although no expert, I don't think that an ex is always entitled to half of a pension, depends on circumstances, and this will be left specifically to daughter.

The position is exactly the same with the pension as with other assets. The default split is 50/50. She may keep the pension if she gives him other assets in exchange, or if the court decides her need is greater than his. But that applies exactly the same to money she was left directly.

It is a fair point that if we assume that the husband will not divorce her, neither of them can access the money for another 17 years (I shouldn't have mentioned age 55 - the OP's daughter turns 55 after 2028 so the minimum age for her to access her pension is 57). And a lot can change in that time.

But the possibility of her losing half of the inheritance due to divorce still exists, and can't really be got around except by leaving the money to someone or something else.
