How long can a business take to process a debit card payment ?

Options
Hi all, we have just bought a car, my husband went to the garage last Saturday, and the garage rang me up st home, so I could pay a deposit on my debit card, then when my husband returned home, I paid the balance through the bank.
He had been today to collect the car, but upto now, the deposit amount that was on my debit card, hadn't gone through the bank !
How long will the garage have to process this ?

I’ve seen threads where people say it’s supposed to be around a week, but that the retailer can process the transaction up to 6 months later.

Talking about how long they can claim the debit card authorisation, rather than how long the debt it enforceable.

The banks seem to have an absolute max for a debit card transaction to process, if it is bounced by the bank you are of course still liable for the 6 year period (which is a different thing to the question asked imo).

I paid £1000 deposit, but it hasn't left my bank account as yet, I don't like the money being there, if it's not mine, I'd rather it leave. Thanks for your replies, I will keep checking, I thought they would have processed it before we collected the car !

As already stated, the transaction is valid for 6 months without needing to contact you, after that they have up to 6 years to enforce the debt but they should contact you first to advise that they are taking the money from your card.

I would call them once to say that the payment is still outstanding, but it's then up to them to actually do something about it.

Some of my debit card payments are paid or reserved instantly, whereas others usually take 2 - 3 days to appear.

I think depends on how soon the payee processes payments.

Can take up to six months, but more likely to be within 10 working days.

I have had payments come out months after I have spent the money so its not a hard and fast rule, and I keep a budget of what I have spent, so I know the money is already earmarked for something.

You may find that the money has already been earmarked from their side and its just doesn't show on your side but you wouldn't be able to spend the money again as its already been earmarked (although you can see it) I cant see them letting the car go without knowledge that the payment has been processed.
